FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Questions? I've Got You Covered.
From choosing the right tomato for your space to understanding availability and harvests, here are answers to some of the questions I hear most often.
What tomato varieties do you grow?
KC Backyard Garden grows a carefully selected collection of unusual heirloom and open-pollinated tomatoes, from tiny Micro Dwarfs and compact Dwarfs to full-size slicers, cherries, specialty varieties, and long keepers. The collection changes from season to season as I continue trying varieties that offer exceptional flavor, interesting characteristics, and strong backyard garden performance.
What's the difference between Micro Dwarf, Dwarf, and full-size tomatoes?
Micro Dwarfs are exceptionally compact tomato plants that can work well in smaller containers, patios, balconies, and other limited spaces. Dwarf tomatoes stay more compact than traditional tomato plants while still producing surprisingly substantial fruit. Full-size varieties have the more vigorous growth habit most gardeners associate with traditional tomatoes and generally need considerably more growing space and support.
Do you sell tomato plants, fresh tomatoes, or both?
Both, depending on the season and availability. Tomato starter plants are offered when plants are ready for transplanting, while fresh tomatoes become available as the garden begins producing. Because everything is grown on a backyard scale, quantities and varieties can change throughout the season.
Can I grow your tomatoes in containers?
Absolutely — but choosing the right variety and container matters. Micro Dwarfs are particularly well suited to container growing, and many Dwarf varieties can also perform beautifully in appropriately sized containers. Some full-size tomatoes can be container grown as well, but they’ll need substantially more soil volume, support, water, and growing space.
Are your tomato varieties heirloom or open-pollinated?
Many of them are. I focus heavily on heirloom, open-pollinated, dwarf, and otherwise distinctive tomatoes rather than limiting the collection to varieties commonly found at garden centers. Individual variety pages provide more information about each tomato and what makes it worth growing.
Do the varieties available change throughout the season?
Yes. Plant availability changes as varieties sell out, new plants become ready, and the growing season progresses. Fresh tomato availability also depends on what is currently ripening in the garden, so what’s available can change quickly during harvest season.
How do I know which tomato is right for my garden?
Start with your available space, sunlight, growing method, and what you enjoy eating. A small patio container may call for a Micro Dwarf, while a larger garden can accommodate vigorous full-size plants. If you’re unsure, send me a question below and I’ll help point you toward varieties that fit your space and goals.
