Every garden and every homeowner is different. Here are answers to some of the questions I hear most often before we begin designing a custom garden.

What plants are currently available?

Plant availability changes throughout the season as new varieties become ready for sale and others sell out. Browse the plant categories above to discover the types and varieties I grow, and check What’s Growing for a look at plants that will be available soon.

Absolutely. Plant selections change throughout the growing season based on what is ready, seasonal conditions, and availability. I continually grow new varieties, so there is often something different to discover throughout the season.

KC Backyard Garden plants are available seasonally at the Overland Park Farmers Market and at select market events. Availability varies from week to week, so check the website and KC Backyard Garden social media for current updates and upcoming market dates.

Not sure what to choose? Consider your available sunlight, growing space, container or garden-bed size, and what you hope to harvest or enjoy. I’m always happy to offer honest recommendations to help you choose plants that are a good fit for your garden and growing conditions.

Many of them, yes! Micro dwarf and dwarf tomatoes, peppers, herbs, flowers, and several vegetables can perform beautifully in containers when given the right pot size, sunlight, soil, and care. Individual plant information can help you determine which varieties are best suited for container growing.

Yes—that’s a big part of KC Backyard Garden. I seek out interesting heirloom, open-pollinated, specialty, and less-common varieties that offer something beyond the ordinary, whether that’s exceptional flavor, unusual color, unique growing characteristics, or simply a little more personality in the garden.
